Sabah Society for the Deaf Resource Centre

Since arriving in Sabah, my wife and I have been involved with the Sabah Society for the Deaf. SSD are a charitable organisation that works throughout Sabah with Deaf children, teenagers, adults and their families in particularly rural areas and larger cities. They provide education, support and access to employment by helping to develop life skills.

The government does provide some funding however it is limited and does not meet the running costs or provide enough support for the Deaf in Sabah. SSD works to ensure the welfare of Deaf people and fight the stigma associated with Deafness that often leaves people isolated and vulnerable.

I have decided I would like to raise money on behalf of one of their schools, focusing on
fund raising in order to set up a Resource Centre specifically for the Deaf, their family and those who work with the Deaf.

We aim to provide a welcoming and informative area to be used by many. We hope to provide
A library for the Deaf with additional books relating to Deaf issues.
A children’s library to promote the use of written language amongst the Deaf community.
An information and support centre for children/adults who are newly diagnosed as Deaf.
Two computers with internet and video cameras so the Deaf can make video phone calls and keep in touch with loved ones.

A collection of resources for teachers of the Deaf.

The Kinabalu International School (K.I.S) has a team of teachers and staff who have been training hard to participate in this year’s Borneo International Marathon and will be running over 100km’s to help us in this! Please kindly support us by donating on line!
