Start with the exact legal name
Look for the organization’s full legal name and registration reference on its own website or official documents. A familiar short name may not match the name used in the registry, and similar names can refer to different organizations.
Keep the name and reference together when you search. If the details do not match, pause and check the organization’s own contact page before relying on the result.
Check the registration route
The right public record depends on how the organization is registered.
- For a society, use the Jabatan Pendaftaran Pertubuhan Malaysia (JPPM/ROS) public status service. Compare the result with the organization’s full legal name and registration details, using the fields and status information the service provides.
- For a company limited by guarantee (CLBG), check SSM’s CLBG information and public lists. SSM e-Info is the official portal for company searches and records; check the current price before ordering a record.
- If the organization states another legal route, check the regulator and record named in its official documents rather than assuming it is a society or company.
Check tax approval separately
Registration and tax approval are different things. LHDN says approval under subsection 44(6) is application-based, not automatic. If tax deductibility matters to you, search LHDN’s current approval list by the organization’s exact name or approval reference.
Read the approval period and conditions in the approval record or letter. Do not assume that registration alone makes a contribution tax-deductible.
Official sources
Use a current support channel
Open the organization’s own website and follow its current contact, wishlist, campaign or volunteer page. Check the date, location, terms and contact details on that page before taking part.
If you found a link on another directory or social post, confirm that the organization still links to it from its own official channels.
Know what a registry check cannot tell you
A registry search can help confirm a legal identity or recorded status. It does not measure an organization’s impact, financial health or current needs. Those questions need other evidence, and a request can change after it is posted.
Charity Malaysia lists organizations and links to public information. Check the source and date shown on each profile, then confirm current details with the organization before acting.
