Name the work you can do
Be specific about the skill you want to offer. A charity can assess “translate a two-page flyer into Bahasa Malaysia” more easily than “I can help with anything.” Say whether you are offering a one-off task or regular hours.
Kechara Soup Kitchen lists roles in graphic design and content creation, photography and video, teaching, translation, finance, grant writing, events, logistics, warehousing and IT support.

Choose a task that fits your time and location
Check whether the work is remote or on site, how often the charity needs help, and where the activity takes place. Kechara Soup Kitchen lists hub-based activities and says it also has alternatives such as data work and in-office support for people who cannot travel to outreach work.
If you can only help for a short period, say so. If you can make a regular commitment, include the days and hours you can keep.

Read the role requirements first
Some tasks need an introduction or training. SPCA Selangor asks first-time volunteers to complete its Pet Care Programme before taking part. Its listed work includes animal care, events and office duties with its marketing and fundraising team.
MERCY Malaysia invites both medical and non-medical volunteers to register. Read the current role description and any eligibility or training details before applying. Requirements vary by organization and task.

Send a clear offer through the official channel
Use the volunteer form or contact details linked from the charity’s own website. Describe the task, your relevant experience, when you are available, how many hours you can give and whether you need to work remotely.
Ask what the organization wants done and who will review the work. Wait for its reply before starting or sharing materials publicly.
Agree on boundaries before you begin
Confirm the expected result, deadline, tools, expenses and who owns or approves the finished work. Ask before accessing personal information, photographing people or posting stories about the charity’s work.
If the role involves children, patients or another group that needs protection, follow the organization’s safeguarding instructions and privacy rules.
